A handful of wood.
A world of play.

Authentic Grapat wooden toys — Nins, mandalas, and loose parts handcrafted in the Pyrenees by a small Catalan family. Sold without instructions, made to last generations.

"Grapat" — Catalan for a handful. A handful of pieces, passed carefully from our hands into the hands of children.

Be free, play open.

The Grapat philosophy in three principles.

Grapat began in 2015 when a Catalan family left the city to live closer to nature. They noticed their daughter didn't need toys to play — she needed materials. A pinecone became a person, a stone became a planet.

That observation is the soul of every Grapat piece: wood reduced to its essential form, hand-stained in a small workshop in the Pyrenees, and offered to children with no instructions and no fixed function.

As an authorized reseller, grapat.store carries the full catalog of authentic Grapat toys — every Nin, mandala, and loose-part set ships directly from authorized stock with full provenance.

Reggio loose parts

Open-ended pieces that become any of "the hundred languages" — a counting set today, a forest tomorrow, a planetary system next week.

Authentic Grapat wooden toys, chosen with care

Grapat is a small family workshop in Catalunya, Spain, founded in 2015 by Casiana and Jordi after they left city life to raise their daughter Lola closer to nature. The name says everything about the philosophy: in Catalan, "grapat" means "a handful." A handful of carefully made wooden pieces, passed from their hands into the hands of a child — that is the whole idea. At grapat.store, we are an authorized reseller carrying the full Grapat catalog, shipping worldwide so families and educators everywhere can bring this kind of slow, open-ended play home.

What makes Grapat different from other wooden toys

Most toys tell a child what to do. Grapat toys do the opposite. There are no instructions, no batteries, no single correct way to play. A set of rainbow Nins can be a family one morning, a row of numbers at lunchtime, and a forest of tiny travellers by evening. This is what early-childhood educators call open-ended play, and it is the engine behind real creativity, problem-solving, and language development. Grapat sits naturally at the meeting point of three respected approaches — Waldorf, Montessori, and Reggio Emilia — without belonging strictly to any of them. Waldorf educators love the natural materials and warm, unhurried aesthetic. Montessori homes value the autonomy and the beauty of real wood in a child's hands. Reggio-inspired classrooms treat the pieces as "loose parts," an open language a child can speak in a hundred ways.

Handcrafted, safe, and made to last generations

Every Grapat piece is made from beech and birch sourced from sustainably managed forests, then hand-stained in the workshop with water-based, non-toxic dyes and finished with vegetable oils. Because each piece is painted by hand, no two are identical — small natural variations in the wood are considered part of the beauty, not a flaw. Packaging has been completely plastic-free since 2019, and sets arrive in GOTS-certified cotton bags made for easy tidying and storage. These are not disposable toys. They are designed to survive years of daily play and to be handed down — the kind of object a child remembers, and later gives to their own children.

The Grapat collections we carry

Our shop is organised the way Grapat play actually works. The Grapat Nins are the iconic wooden peg people — the storytelling heart of the brand, available as classic rainbow sets, seasonal editions, Tomtens, Baby Nins, and themed storytelling collections. The Grapat mandalas are coordinated sets of small wooden loose parts in shapes like mushrooms, raindrops, eggs, flowers, and coins, perfect for sorting, counting, pattern-making, and sensory trays. The loose parts collection gathers bowls, rings, coins, mates, and the larger complete play sets like Lola and Carla. We also carry calendars that help children feel the rhythm of the week and the year, plus limited seasonal releases including the much-loved Grapat x Ostheimer collaborations.

Choosing your first Grapat set

If you are buying your first Grapat toy, the Twelve Nins set is the most loved starting point — twelve rainbow peg people that work for storytelling, colour sorting, counting, and small-world play, and that pair with almost everything else in the range. For a child who is drawn to patterns and detail, a single mandala set is an inexpensive, deeply absorbing introduction. For classrooms, therapy practices, and homeschools, the larger sets like Lola or the Nins, Rings and Coins sorting game give the widest range of play in one box. Whatever you choose, you are not really buying a toy with a fixed purpose — you are handing a child a handful of possibilities.

Questions, answered

What are Grapat toys?

Grapat is a family-run Spanish toy workshop founded in 2015. They handcraft wooden toys — Nins (peg people), mandalas, and loose parts — designed for open-ended play with no instructions. All toys use beech and birch from sustainable forests with water-based, non-toxic dyes.

What age are Grapat toys for?

Grapat toys are designed for children from 12 months and up, with most loose-part sets recommended for ages 3+ due to small parts. Because the toys are open-ended, they grow with the child and remain engaging well into school years and beyond.

Are Grapat toys Montessori or Waldorf?

Grapat sits at the intersection of Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia philosophies. The toys honor each approach: natural materials and beauty (Waldorf), child-led autonomy (Montessori), and loose parts as a creative language (Reggio).

Where are Grapat toys made?

Every Grapat toy is handcrafted in their family workshop in the Pyrenean mountains of Catalunya, Spain. All collaborators and suppliers are based in Europe, and packaging has been 100% plastic-free since 2019.

Is grapat.store the official Grapat website?

No — the official manufacturer's website is grapat.eu. grapat.store is an authorized reseller carrying the full Grapat catalog with worldwide shipping. Every product we sell is authentic Grapat, sourced through authorized channels.
